Small Town Murder Podcast on Tour

True crime is all the rage in the podcast world these days, thanks in no small part to offerings such as "Small Town Murder." The brainchild of two Phoenix-based comedians, James Pietragallo and Jimmie Whisman, "Small Town Murder" focuses on—as its name implies—murder cases that have gripped small towns.

Pietragallo and Whisman are no strangers to the podcast world. In 2016, the friends debuted "Crime in Sports," putting a humorous spin on professional athletes whose poor life decisions torpedoed their careers. Even before that, the duo grew up as true crime aficionados. Pietragallo told the Chicago Tribune that his mom "used to read me horrible true-crime books," and Whisman revealed that he was an avid "Dateline" viewer.

The format of "Small Town Murder" will be familiar to fans of the sister show. Each episode focuses on one murder case in a specific location, and it covers killings that might not have received a lot of mainstream press. But the show is about far more than just heinous crimes: Episodes include love triangles, sudden disappearances, and botched relationships, as well as bumbling criminals and the kind of quirky scenarios found only in out-of-the-way places.

So what makes "Small Town Murder" stand out from the true-crime-podcast pack? The impressive amount of research that goes into each episode, for starters. Plus, Pietragallo and Whisman possess an easy camaraderie that softens the tone of the serious subject matter, meaning the show has an expert balance of suspense, mystery, and lighthearted commentary. And perhaps even more important: While the men pepper their well-crafted storytelling with plenty of humor, they always state up front that there's absolutely no mockery of murder victims or their families allowed.

The "Small Town Murder" tour, Shut Up and Give Me Murder!, promises to preserve the spirit of the podcast while giving fans a chance to mix and mingle with other dedicated listeners.

  • Best time ever

by Anthony from the UK on 12/21/24Chevalier Theatre - MedfordRating: 5 out of 5

Had been waiting for this show all year and didn't disappoint. Managed to meet both James and Jimmie before the show and they couldn't be nicer or more humble people. Couldn't believe I'd come from the UK just for the shows. The show was so funny. The interaction between the them is what makes this work. 1800 people shouting 'shut up and give me murder' is an experience. Then to top it all Jimmie appears at the hotel, so engaging with fans and then invites us out to the bar. I doubt you will find any other hosts as friendly or engaging with their fan/listeners. Next time they do a show in a city I can get direct flights, I may be making another trip. Thank you James and Jimmie for making this crazy Brit's trip worthwhile.

  • Terrific

The Chevalier theater is a smaller venue but welcoming. The seats are close together so you'll be making friends with your neighbor. The stage could be seen from any seat in the house.

James and Jimmie did a great job. They were funny, entertaining and the case they reviewed was interesting. The theatre was a nice and plenty of stalls in the ladies bathroom. Probably the most entertaining was listening to drunk lady that repeatedly yelled for Jimmie before the show started or the woman that was angry no one clapped along with her during a song. Some good people watching.

  • Such a great evening

I had an amazing time at the Small Town Murder show! James and Jim were hilarious, delivering their usual mix of dark humor and clever insights that kept the whole crowd laughing from start to finish. The crowd was super engaged and had great energy, which made the experience even better. The venue was perfect—easy to get to, comfortable, and just the right size to feel intimate without being too crowded. Overall, a fantastic night out and definitely recommend catching these guys if they come to your town!

  • Incredible and I would see theme every time now!

I would legit see them on every tour "season"from now, on, this was a special event and memory I will treasure forever. They're just as funny if not more live as they have pictures to go with comedy. I just wish they would do Your Stupid Opinions Live! next.
