Tower of Power on Tour

When Tower of Power took the stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 40th anniversary show in 2008, it was as full circle as live music moments get. A recorded introduction by the dearly departed, legendary promoter Bill Graham — who gave the band their big break and signed them to his label in the late '60s — kicked off the energetic musical explosion that Tower of Power have never stopped bringing to the stage. The Tower of Power five-piece horn section, led by founding members Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, has been the driving force behind a group with over 60 touring members in its history. The R&B funk and soul revue also features furious percussionists, guitar, keys and more vocal blends than you can imagine. The elite collection of musicians have never stopped touring, and whether at a casino theater or a classic concert hall, a Tower of Power show is always gonna be a kickin' good time. Their Oakland-born sound emerged in 1968, and even after 50 years their shows still manage to feel contemporary.

Tower of Power in Concert

In 1968, Oakland's Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka formed a band with the goal of playing at San Francisco's iconic Fillmore theater. By 1970, Tower of Power were not only on the stage, but signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco Records for their debut album East Bay Grease. When they moved over to Warner Bros Records in 1972, they started to leave a timeless mark beyond the Bay Area with the release of now-classic albums — Bump City, Tower of Power, Urban Renewal and more. Throughout their 19 albums, including 2018's Soul Side of Town, the band have covered every inch of R&B, soul and funk, constantly evolving and paving the way for many other artists.

Tower of Power was just fantastic! My wife and I hadn’t seen them since 1975, they were great then and they haven’t missed a beat. They’ve had to replace a few members, but the new guys were very good.

  • Fantastic from start to finish

I have been following this band for a long time and they were every bit as good or better than expected. They put on a great show! I have never been to this venue and it was organized, comfortable and provided good seating options.

  • Still Bringing the Funk After All These Years

by Tom on 3/17/25Hard Rock Live Rockford - RockfordRating: 5 out of 5

From the moment Tower of Power took the stage, it was clear that age has done nothing to diminish their legendary funk prowess. The Oakland-born outfit, celebrating over five decades in the business, delivered a masterclass in tight, horn-driven grooves that had the crowd moving from start to finish. The iconic horn section remains the beating heart of the band, executing those precise, punchy arrangements with the same precision that made them legends in the first place. Their brass attack was as formidable as ever, with perfectly synchronized section work that sounded both meticulously rehearsed and spontaneously alive. While the lineup has evolved over the years, the current incarnation honors the band's rich legacy while bringing fresh energy to both classics and newer material. The rhythm section locked in immediately, creating that unmistakable Tower of Power pocket – a groove so deep you could fall into it and never want to climb out. What's most impressive is how the band has maintained their musical tightness despite the passage of time. There's no sign of slowing down or phoning it in; if anything, decades of performing together have only made them more cohesive. The interplay between musicians demonstrated the kind of intuitive communication that only comes from countless hours on stage together. The vocals soared over the instrumental foundation, delivering soulful performances on classics like "What Is Hip?"and "You're Still a Young Man"that honored the originals while adding subtle new dimensions. New comer and lead vocalist Jordan John did his predecessors proud including add some tasty lead guitar playing. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, the show was a powerful reminder that Tower of Power remains one of funk music's most formidable live acts. They may be veterans, but there's nothing old about their ability to deliver pulse-quickening, hip-shaking funk of the highest order. Tower of Power isn't just surviving – they're thriving, proving that their musical alchemy is truly timeless and deserving to be considered to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

  • Tower of Power

by Steve on 3/17/25Hard Rock Live Rockford - RockfordRating: 4 out of 5

The band was excellent. However, the camera operator really didn’t have a clue about which band member was playing. The camera work was annoying.

  • Very excited

What a phenomenal tight group, I've been a fan of them since they began in the last 60's. They had the audience on their dancing to the music.

This was a great concert and had a lot of energy. The sound was great, songs were wonderful and the singer got the crowd energized. Everyone in the band played very well and got to have their moment. Sad that the concert wasn't sold out , but my husband and I were thrilled with all the music . • High energy soul party

by Bandsmith on 3/17/25Hard Rock Live Rockford - RockfordRating: 5 out of 5

Once again, Tower of Power caught a Groove from the first note and held it through the whole night. They continue to be a wonderful and entertaining group to see live with a show that is always demonstrates musical virtuosity while showing their love for performing for their very appreciative audiences. Of course we were blessed with all of TOP’s standard hits sprinkled with some new tunes showing off the musicianship of all of the members. This was our first time at Hard Rock Rockford, a newer venue. It is a fabulous place with great sound and lights, and a nice size for a more intimate setting. We had a fun and entertaining evening of live entertainment!

  • Great Show

by Dr. G on 3/17/25Hard Rock Live Rockford - RockfordRating: 5 out of 5

Tower of Power is one of, if not the greatest horn band ever. The show was excellent, the horns were great of course, but the rhythm section was absolutely awesome! Of course all the great songs, Soul Vaccination, What is Hip, James Brown and more. If you have a chance to see this show, do it!!!

  • Tower of Power never disappoints

by Babs on 3/17/25Hard Rock Live Rockford - RockfordRating: 5 out of 5

This was our 11th time seeing TOP. The sound in Hard Rock was pristine. Emilio, Adolfo, Doc and Big Love played on fire. We actually saw Jordan’s debut last year in St Louis. He seems to be even better. Worth it. A must see!!!!

  • A enjoyable night with Tower of power

by Night of fun on 3/10/25The Edge Pavilion - LaughlinRating: 5 out of 5

I am in my 60s and I’ve never seen a tower of power concert before I’ve been to lots of concerts but this was my first time seeing tower of power and concert. They did an excellent show. I would gladly pay to see them again. And my wife also really enjoyed the show.

They played for 2 hours and no medleys, good singer and horns!

  • Not their best

by Saxman Neil on 3/4/25The Edge Pavilion - LaughlinRating: 4 out of 5

You can’t find a more talented and powerful band but I’ve seen them several times and this time gave me pause on seeing them again. I am so grateful these guys do what they do, touring endlessly, but I didn’t feel they were playing for the audience - more, that they were simply clicking off songs on the playlist.

  • Tower of Power

Tower of Power at The Edge Pavilion in Laughlin was awesome!! They sounded amazing. We really enjoyed the new singer Jordan John, very talented. He fit right in to the TOP sound. The new drummer and keyboardist were outstanding. The new, ‘young’ guys fit in perfectly! Thanks❣️
