Boston Celtics History

The Celtics are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, holding the record for most NBA Championships at 18, along with 11 conference titles and 34 division titles. They’ve retired 24 jersey numbers — the most of any franchise in the league.

The franchise was founded in 1946 and won their first championship in the 1956–57 season, which was the start of the most dominant run by any team in NBA history. Powered by Hall of Famers Bill Russell and coach Red Auerbach the Celtics won 11 NBA Championships in a 13-year span. Russell won the NBA MVP Award five times in that stretch, and teammate Bob Cousy also was named league MVP once. Of their first 11 championships, seven came against the Lakers, launching a cross-country rivalry that is still one of the league’s fiercest today.

After two more titles in the ’70s, the Celtics began another dominant stretch, making the finals five times in seven years and winning behind three-time season MVP Larry Bird. The Celtics did not return to the finals until the 2007–08 season, when they formed the "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. They once again beat the Lakers to win their 17th championship.

The Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022, but eventually lost to the Golden State Warriors. The team recorded the league’s highest all-time regular season offensive rating and won the championship in 2024, led by Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

Boston Celtics at TD Garden

TD Garden opened in 1995 and replaced the original Boston Garden, which housed the Celtics for 49 years. In the nearly 30 years it has hosted the Celtics, TD Garden has been renovated three times: in 2006, 2009 and 2014. The latest renovations added a new HD entertainment board, a see-through shot clock and an LED lighting system to the exterior of the building.

TD Garden also houses The Sports Museum, which features memorabilia from various sports teams and events in the area, including the Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. It also features sculptures of some of the most legendary athletes in Boston's history, including Larry Bird.

by DvdV on 4/16/25TD Garden - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Very disappointing to see 2 teams playing without the top 5 players. I know that they did not care about this game but you pay to see the top guys and then you get this…

Easy access to venue, loads of choices for food and drink. Toilets were clean and didn’t have to queue long for anything. Getting out took minutes after the game.

  • Great view, cramped seats

    by Piper33 on 3/11/25TD Garden - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

We were in section 304. Decent view of the court but the legroom for the seats is just ridiculous. Both my wife and I cramped up while watching the game, and she is 5 foot 3. Overall experience was great, however. Can't beat a Celtics/Lakers game with Lebron & Luka! Wish there weren't so many LA fans in attendance, 'tho. Not used to so much cheering at TD whenever the Lakers scored! :)

  • You never know what will happen at the Garden.

by Rachael from Rhody on 3/8/25TD Garden - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

On a night when JT, KP, and Jrue were out, I knew I was going to get a lot of D White time. (Yay!!!! Lucky me). And boy did he deliver, along with Playground P. I was fortunate to witness history close up and in person. What a treat to see a West Coast P performance at the garden. Glorious night!!
