David Foster on Tour

Though he's best known as the behind-the-scenes producer and songwriter for megastars like Celine Dion, Michael Buble and Josh Groban, David Foster isn't afraid to step out in front of the mic on occasion. In 2018, he launched The Hitman Tour, a special series of intimate shows that saw him perform selections from his vast repertoire of hits on the piano alongside a revolving cast of guest vocalists (including his wife, Katharine McPhee) and share stories of the songs' creation. The tour proved so successful that Foster extended it through 2019 and into 2020. But Foster isn't one to rest on his past glories: April 2020 sees the release of his first solo album in 24 years, Eleven Words, which applies the stripped-down piano setting of the Hitman Tour to a set of 11 new originals.

David Foster in Concert

Look up any adult-contemporary pop hit from the past 40 years, and there's a good chance David Foster's name is somewhere in the credits. Over the course of his storied career, the Victoria, British Columbia, impresario has mentored some of the biggest names in pop and pushed veteran rock artists to even loftier levels of success, earning some 16 Grammys and Order of Canada honors in the process. After first breaking into the music industry playing keyboards for Canadian soul-rock troupe Skylark, Foster spent the '70s as a session player for the likes of George Harrison and Diana Ross, before scoring his first high-profile writing credit on Earth, Wind & Fire's classic 1979 slow jam "After the Love Has Gone." But through his early-'80s collaborations with Chicago, Foster minted his signature glossy sound, transforming the group from a jazzy classic-rock warhorse into a soft-rock hit machine before applying that Midas touch to Lite-FM divas like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in the '90s. Amazingly, Foster's hitmaking prowess has only grown more potent since then — in the 21st century, he turned Michael Buble from a wedding singer into a world-class crooner and guided Josh Groban's crossover from classical to pop. But for all his successes behind the boards, Foster has never lost his passion for performing, by periodically tending to his own career as a solo artist in between his production work.

It was a night of wonderful music, cheerful banter and unexpected great fun! Can’t remember a concert I’ve enjoyed more.

David Foster has written or produced so many great hit songs, it's hard to remember them all. He and Katherine McPhee gave a lot of personal stories and their personal histories, as well as their history together. David Foster is an excellent keyboard player, and Katherine was great on the vocals. We enjoyed it so much, we would consider seeing them again in the future.

They totally rocked the entire performance! They were funny, loving, professional and Kathryn’s voice was to die for! It felt like a warm family night out with them. I cannot wait to see them again. Totally entertaining.

  • One of the best

One of the best concerts ever and I’ve gone to many in my 70 yrs! I’ve been in music all my life. My husband and I changed our schedule around and cancelled a gig of our own to see this concert. David Foster is a musical genius we’ve been following for decades and Katharine McPhee is blessed with a superb vocal instrument and beauty to boot. They’re a great team. I couldn’t wait to hear her in person over a great sound system. It was a nice mix of music and talking to get to know David and Katharine since it was “An Intimate Evening” with them. I liked seeing their son when they brought him out in his jammies. The female Audience Participant was a highlight and I would like to have heard the whole song. A commercial airline pilot who flies a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, looks like a model, and can sing like that? Wow. If I could offer some tips that would have elevated the experience even more: The concert was to start at 8 pm but nothing happened til 8:15. Would have been nice to get an announcement, explanation, or an acknowledgement of our time / patience. We were so anticipating it, that 15 mins seemed like forever. A small thing but started it off like our time wasn’t being respected. I wanted to hear Katharine’s voice louder than the music. Finally at the end of the concert when she sang a couple standards, I could hear it like I wished since there was just David’s piano accompaniment. Give “special guest” billing to Daniel Emmet. He was fantastic. In the Audience Participation segment, find another song instead of that one the guy sang with Katherine about “you look like someone I could love.” They asked us if they should keep it in the show. I’d say no, it lowers the class. Couldn’t wait for that one to end. No need for the blue language. Not everyone wants to hear that. Make sure the ushers are familiar with the seat map. We got sent back and forth 3 times. “The next door is closer to your seat.” “No it’s the other door. I’ve worked here for years.” David said they were evacuated from the fire 10 days ago. I pray they and all the band people are saved from the effects of those L.A. fires.

  • Was a perfect evening.

This was our first experience at the venue, and it couldn’t have been more delightful! Seeing David Foster and Katharine McPhee perform was truly special. Their chemistry and playful banter, combined with their beautiful music, created an unforgettable evening. The venue itself was perfect—every detail contributed to a fantastic atmosphere. The staff went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly, and the sound quality was excellent throughout the performance. I also appreciated that every seat offered a great view, making it a wonderful experience for everyone in attendance. I can't wait for our next visit! Feel free to adjust any part to better match your personal style!

First off, David Foster's Band was so good; played music with such modulation and clarity. The show overall was fantastic and very entertaining. Of course, it's only possible with David Foster's mastery of the stage. Excellent show!

  • We loved it.

Fantastic!! Great.show. They are both so talented and the guest tenor was as good as Groban.

  • Foster's Ego Way Too Big

He talked way too much about himself and pouted over awards he had lost. Needed more of Katherine singing.

  • Fantastic!

This concert was too short!! I could have listened to David and Katherine all night. They are wonderful entertainers and made me feel like I was sitting in their living room. The only downside was the audience participation set. Could have done without it.
