About

KURT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS IN CONCERT:

Kurt Vile is the shy guy at the eye of a swirling hurricane of beautiful sonic textures. With his hypnotic fingerpicked guitar melodies and mumbled, cryptic lyrics, Vile lays the dark and earthy groundwork of the group’s sound in concert. His backing band the Violators take the folk-inspired tunes into the stratosphere with lush, spiraling guitars, driving drum patterns, and melodic basslines as each song builds to a climatic conclusion that envelops the listener. Ticket buyers can’t help but get swept up in the warm washes of folk, indie, and psychedelia that Kurt Vile and the Violators consistently deliver in performance.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kurt Vile (born in Lansdowne, PA in 1980) began his musical journey when his father gave him a banjo at age 14, though he soon switched to guitar to begin recording demos. His career picked up in 2003 when he met Adam Granduciel and formed The War on Drugs, a project that remained his primary focus until the release of the band's 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues. With his own music calling, Vile left The War on Drugs during the ensuing tour to focus on his solo career, releasing his debut album Constant Hitmaker later in 2008. He inked a deal with Matador for the 2009 follow-up album Childish Prodigy and gained exposure by touring with high-profile labelmates like Dinosaur Jr. and Thurston Moore. His third solo offering Smoke Ring for My Halo arrived in 2011 and signaled a major commercial and critical breakthrough for the singer/songwriter as publications like Pitchfork, Mojo, and Uncut ranked it as one of the best albums of the year. Kurt Vile and the Violators continue to work on their fifth album while perpetually thrilling live audiences with their increasingly sophisticated songs and superlative sonics. Over the course of his career, Kurt Vile has played at famed venues like the Old National Centre in Indianapolis or Webster Hall in New York City.

  • Non-Sensical

I don’t blame my average review on the band but on the venue. Poor sound quality throughout the shows and blinding lights at times. They need to do better. The crowd was appreciate of the artists’ effort. I couldn’t understand the lyrics of many songs because sound was so muddled.

  • Kurt Vile rocks

by Jake on 6/27/24Taft Theatre - CincinnatiRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Kurt Vile a couple of times now. He is an incredibly underrated artist in my opinion and deserves more recognition. His live shows are great. Many of his songs translate well into live shows, sometimes sounding heavier but in a good way. Definitely recommend catching him live.

  • A mess. Music drowned out the lyrics.

by Disappointed on 6/26/24Taft Theatre - CincinnatiRating: 1 out of 5

I am a huge music fan, have been to so many concerts, I could not count them. This was different. The opening act should have been a clue. It was one song that was just instrumental and lasted 40 minutes. It was one gal playing guitar loud and it droned on, just not good. I wish I could have that 40 minutes back. We were excited to see Kurt Vile but the instrumentals were so loud, you could not even hear the lyrics when he sang. Wouldn't you think they would get that right before the concert, especially in view of the fact that it started late? He looked like he just got out of bed, but maybe that is his preferred look. Could hardly see what he looked like because his hair covered a lot of his face. We left after the fourth song and happy to do so. We will just stream Kurt's music, a much better experience.

  • Kurt Was Excellent! Opening Act, Terrible.

by PG on 6/26/24Taft Theatre - CincinnatiRating: 5 out of 5

Kurt was absolutely fantastic, but good god that opening act was fingernails on a chalkboard. I'm sure she's a lovely person, but it was 40 minutes of truly horrific guitar sounds. People around me were laughing, like it was some kind of joke. I know this sounds harsh, but if you were there, you know. Anywho, Kurt was sooo very good live. I'd definitely go see him again (but I'd come a bit late to avoid that opener). I didn't know much about him prior to the concert, but I'm definitely a fan now.

  • Fantastic performance

Absolutely killer show!!! Wish the audience wasn't so stiff, as it was hard to stay in my seat and not dance. If I would have stood up the people behind me would get upset. Again, great show at a lovely, beautiful venue. They deserved a more engaging appreciative audience in my opinion.

  • Be professional

by The show was poorly run on 6/20/24Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center (HMAC) Capitol Room - HarrisburgRating: 3 out of 5

The warm up band was horrible. After that was a very long time waiting in a crowded hall as roadies taped and retaped playlists. It was not a good show.

  • Terrific show

by TunesInAL on 4/1/24Iron City - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

First, Kurt Vile is just such a musical genius. His melodies and rhythm, along with lyrics, are really interesting and truly entertaining. Kurt's guitar work is also really amazing. I've been a fan for a while, and this was a truly great show. Iron City (venue) was also really great and the sound was really on point. Not crowded (spring break), which was nice, although there were enough people there to make it fun.

  • Awesome!!

by Em on 3/30/24Iron City - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Got the tickets for bfs birthday, as we both love much Kurt Vile. Venue was clean, friendly, and not overcrowded. Drinks were good and not too overpriced. Kurt Vile was a great show! One of my all time favorite acts! 10/10 would do again!!
