Shawn Colvin in Concert
Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut album, Steady On in 1989. She has been a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since, releasing eleven superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. She triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards, winning both Record and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home.” Her inspiring and candid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which chronicles her struggles with depression and eating disorders, was published to strong reviews in 2012. With the wit, lyricism, and empathy that have characterized Shawn’s performances and inspired audiences worldwide, Diamond in the Rough looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor.
Shawn’s most recent solo endeavor, Uncovered (Fantasy Records, 2015), is the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl. Uncovered's twelve tunes include masterful interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash to name a few, but in their selection and delivery, they are pure Shawn Colvin.
In June 2016, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle united to release, Colvin & Earle, their acclaimed self-titled duo album (Fantasy Records). Produced by Buddy Miller (Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams) the album features guitarist Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), drummer Fred Eltringham (Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves), and bassist Chris Wood (of Medeski Martin & Wood). Fueled by their longtime friendship, Colvin & Earle beautifully captures the pair’s extraordinary chemistry and is a true standout in careers already filled with pinnacles and masterpieces. The album received high praise from critics – NPR asserted that the duo “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.”
Shawn’s longtime career achievements were recognized when she was recently bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at this year’s Americana Honors & Awards Show, held at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium on September 21st, 2016. Presenting Colvin with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Of Shawn, Raitt said “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard— and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake”

When Shawn Colvin sings her music it's heavenly. Of course it is. So it's a mystery to me why she would leave out so much of her own fine work in favor of so many covers. There is also soooo much pointless, poorly scripted chatting (mixed with a fair amount of self aggrandizing) that you want to yell, "Sing something by Shawn Colvin!" I will just add that to not mention women's right or LGBTQ rights or anything at all, really, of any importance or interest, when you're in San Francisco two days after this tragic election cycle was shocking. She is clearly not interested in using her platform to support women in any way - which was kind of laughable since she stretched so hard to put herself in proximity with Taylor Swift. KT is also an incredible musician and carries much of the show on her extremely capable shoulders but c'mon ladies, if you're going to talk that much you need to say something.
What a show! These two immensely talented women combined on stage and made the audience feel like they were in their own living room trading stories and songs. So fun and magical. Loved it!
It was such a wonderful surprise to have Shawn and KT share the stage together. Genius. They complimented each other perfectly, moving between their solo songs and solo and harmonizing alternatively between verses and chorus. All that with a peppering of fabulous story telling. My only critique is that it seemed like Shawn was off sync between her playing and singing.
Really enjoyed Shawn & KT! They have such great voices. They were great together.
Wonderful venue, beautiful performance by KT and Shawn. Amazing vocals and playing by both. Disappointed not to hear Shawn perform “Shotgun Down the Avalanche,” but still very happy I was there.
What a thought would be just a lovely evening of live music by Shawn Colvin and KT Tunstell absolutely exceeded all my expectations! In short, phenomenal performances by both artists. I loved the balance of energy and the story telling. Truly exceptional evening! 👏
Wifey and I had the opportunity to see KT Tunstall and Shawn Colvin at the Wilson Center in Wilmington, NC earlier in the week. The facility is beautiful. It is very clean and well maintained with great overall seating. Regarding the show, both artists were center stage and traded off singing individual songs. KT Tunstall was very energetic and set the tone for an upbeat evening. On the other hand, Shawn brought the crowd back down to earth with her “boring tales” of yesteryear and failed relationships. Sure, she can play a guitar (once she tunes it) but her music is DOA (dead on arrival.). We actually wished that the two ladies could have gone on individually - played 7 or 8 songs each, and concluded with 3 or 4 songs of a duet. Anyway, a big hug and congrats does go out to Shawn for her continued sobriety - the two ladies just need different partners when playing music as opposed to playing together.
I've been a fan of all three artists who performed at this concert for many years. They were so generous to each other and to the audience. It was a fantastic concert and my husband and I are so so glad that we went. Loved the format, loved the singing and the instrumentation. There was a wonderful two way love stream between the audience and the musicians. It is always joyful when it happens like that- it feels like there is an intimacy that doesn't often happen.
The combination of the three musicians blended perfectly together making this a unique and very enjoyable acoustic concert. A treat not to be needing ear plugs at the state theater.
