Big Something in Concert

With a name like Big Something, this North Carolina-based band has a lot to live up to. But if you're a fan of fun, funky fusions of jam-rock, alt-rock, and even a little hip-hop, they'll likely meet every one of your expectations, especially if you're able to catch them in their natural habitat: the music festival.

The band has come a long way since forming in Maryland in 2009 as a trio simply known as "anonymous." Once lead vocalist Nick MacDaniels moved to North Carolina, the lineup expanded and eventually took on the more commanding name Big Something. Over the years, the six members, along with regular lyricist Paul Interdonato, have shared a wide range of influences — Talking Heads, Flaming Lips, Gorillaz, Rush, Zappa, Miles Davis, and Sly and the Family Stone —and have synthesized them into an impressive mix made of strings, horns, and synths.

Big Something first set this sound to record with ‘Stories from the Middle of Nowhere' in 2010. With the help of Grammy-nominated producer John Cluster, the release showed off the band's hard-rock edge and funk-infused grooves, and it kick-started a heavy touring schedule across the U.S. Three years later, they returned with their self-titled sophomore album, then one year later with third release ‘Truth Serum.' By this time, they had become seasoned performers, opening for bands like The B52s, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Galactic, moe., and Umphrey's McGee.

After plenty of time on the road, the band came back in 2017 with fourth album ‘Tumbleweed,' quickly followed by ‘The Otherside' in 2018. Still, seeing them live remains the ultimate Big Something experience. Fans are invited to bring balloons, costumes, and bubbles to any and all shows, and while the band performs many originals, they're also known to unleash some groovy covers of artists like the Talking Heads, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, and even a little Coolio (yes, "Fantastic Voyage"!). They've become a must-see act at music festivals around the nation, including their own annual festival in North Carolina called The Big What?

    It was another magical night with Big Something at Greenfield Amphitheatre in Wilmington, NC. My friends and I were fortunate enough to be able to see one of our favorite bands live. Although it was very humid and hot, the real heat came from the guitar of Jesse. We really enjoyed the first set as they came out blazing. The second set was utterly amazing hitting the pinnacle as the band played a brand-new song that they had just finished that afternoon. One of the best places to see any band. Beautiful and intimate. The combination of the band and the venue is magic.

    The bands were 100% Venue was oversold…capacity is 1200, 1500 tix were sold. When the heat and humidity is absolutely brutal, adding 300 extra bodies is a fail for the bands and fans.

    I saw The Big Something in Harrisburg at Club XL at the start of their tour and they were so great I had to go again. Seeing they were coming to DC, I grabbed my accomplices and planned a road trip. I was very happy to see The Atlantis was an intimate venue. Everyone was really hospitable who worked there. The Reis brother were really great and entertaining and I would definitely see them again. The Big Something came on and blew the doors off the place. Such energy, charisma and musical expertise was on display as I have never seen. It was an just an incredible the wall of sound they were generating. When you have a skilled group of musicians all doing their job and communicating on stage you get results like I witnessed. The setlist was also excellent and they played an extra hour not looking fatigued at all from their long tour. I can't wait to see them again.

    Big Something was amazing live. They extended most of their songs from the album versions, and were incredibly solid at the end of their Headspace tour. The Atlantis was a tight (small) venue with mediocre acoustics, especially on the ground floor. Balcony level sounded much better.

    Big Something always delivers. This was their second to last show of a very long tour and - as always - they played their hearts out. The love and passion for what they do always comes through. I have seen them 5 or so times. This performance was as tight as all the others. The only thing I would have preferred is that they play more of the older stuff (e.g., Love Generator). The new Headspace tracks are good, but let's keep it real: How many of us actually get excited when a band says 'And here's one from our new album'? But that is a minor comment. The show was great and props to the opening act: "The Ries Brothers'. They invited the Ries Brothers on stage at the end and closed with Peter Gabriel's 'Sledge Hammer'. Having seen Peter Gabriel live a number of times, I can say they get respect for their version. In summary, great band, great show: Go see them!
