Great venue to see this performance. Amazing music. It was perfection.
Another great show from Branford! Jo Theatre in San Antonio was a great intimate venue to showcase him and his band. Drums and Keys helped kick it into high gear Friday!
Disappointing. I was hoping for rhythm and a blended flow of jazz . With the exception of 2-3 pieces, it was a combination of fragmented music with too many solos. While I’m sure the musicians are very talented, they failed to blend their skills into a rhythmic flow of jazz.
Loved the entire production and presentations!! Thank You!!
Beautiful music by wonderful individuals who love what they good. The experience was needed on a MLK day. Love is the answer to all.
I’m a big jazz fan and see shows every week. I didn’t know what to expect from Branford — the tix were a gift from my daughter — but was blown away by this show. I loved the space they mostly stayed in, dramatic, modern, chromatically interesting, fired up and beautiful (no fusion or “pop”-sounding stuff, and no descent into complete atonality either), and then the cool interpretations of the old swing songs at the end was a great cap to a great show.
The fact that there were problems with the ticketing process and the air conditioning in the venue made things possibly seem worse than they were! Unfortunately, most of what Branford played was not the type of jazz that I enjoy. I am more accustomed to the music of Wynton Marsalis. That said, the last few pieces that were played by the quartet were enjoyable.
Michael Becker was one of the great tenor sax players of his generation. This was a fitting tribute from players who knew him well. While most of the audience already knew Branford Marsalis and Joe Lovano I suspect most NY jazz fans are not as familiar with George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi. After this concert everyone in attendance now knows these two belonged on that stage. The Memory of Michael Brecker was well served by this tribute concert.
All the players were all top notch. The sentiment for Michael Brecker was genuine and touching, but the music was mind-blowing. Branford Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Joey Calderazzo and Bill Stewart were standouts, and it was a great privilege to be witness to this performance. No trite or cute phrasing, but beautiful and easy to listen to and get captured by the music.
Great venue, great musicians great evening! Would see the concert again looking forward to the next time
