The Robert Cray Band in Concert
When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.
Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.
The Robert Cray Band Background
Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.
Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

Robert Cray Band was awesome. The interaction with the crowd fabulous. First time seeing him live, I would go back again and again!!!
A good show but I was not as impressed as I had hoped for. Most concerts I attend exceed expectations, this one only met them!
Robert Cray and his band were tremendous example why blues artist should receive more support and promotion. The Magnolia was a perfect venue for the show- free parking, great customer support, comfortable seats!
I've seen Robert Cray a few times including one of his very shows in the 80's. He's always had such an amazing voice and distinctive guitar sound. His voice was so good, you wouldn't guess he's 71 years old. But, as would be expected, age has affected his crisp and melodic guitar solos. They lacked the familiar twang and punchy rhythms he's known for. In fact, many didn't sound much like the original songs. Backed by a great band - shout out to the keyboard player - Cray played mostly newer stuff and broke out a few songs that made him famous near the end of the show. Overall, a decent show but when a performer's guitar sound is as iconic as his voice, the night suffers when one isn't up to par.
Robert Cray and his band were AWESOME. They are a true professional act. Great musicians and Robert’s voice is AMAZING. His interactions with the audience are so heartfelt and he is very appreciative of them. The amount of sound these four guys produce is spectacular. Kudos to them and Robert’s guitar tech who kept all the guitars in tune and ready for action. Highly recommend going to see them play
The venue was small and very intimate for the band and crowd experience. Our seats were dead center about seven rows from the stage. There wasn’t an opening act so the audience was getting restless because the show was starting 50 minutes late. When the band came onstage and got going everyone immediately forgot about the wait and started to get into the music. Robert Cray was awesome and the band put on a great show. It was special, and definitely worth the wait!
I really enjoyed the show. Very talented musician. Even his band was enjoying his impromptu changes in the music.
I love that almost all his music are songs that he wrote. He is a fantatic guitar player, making the instrument sing and talk for him, additionally, he has an excellent voice and he's a great singer. I loved seeing him perform in a small venue (Uptown Theater, Napa) and I plan to go download more of his music for my future enjoyment.
Long time fan of the Robert Cray band. They still sound great!! New stuff and old, loved every bit of it
