DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

  • Devo at Boston MGM Fenway

by DSmith7088 on 5/15/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I was so impressed by Devo when I first saw them at Cruel World 2022. They almost stole the show. So when they scheduled this show on 5/9/25 in Boston, we had to go. They put on a great show. Great synthesizer use with all songs and the lead singer was in good voice. Seemed to be a sold-out show with an enthusiastic audience. Aside from Whip It, Devo has a few other classics such as Girl U Want, Freedom of Choice and Don't Shot I'm a Man. Recommend Devo for all to see.

  • Too much money not to hear Be Stiff, or Social Fool

by The Words Get Stuck In My Throat on 5/14/25TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - ClevelandRating: 2 out of 5

I've seen Devo a number of times. The 1st time, in the 70's, at the Agora still being the best. This show started and stayed too long on the sell-out period of their career. The notion of spending over $100 to hear only about 1/3rd of the songs I wanted to hear...sorry guys, but NEVER AGAIN.

Awesome show. The original members are still going strong and we’re so entertaining. Can’t wait for the 100th anniversary tour wherever that will take place

  • Poorly planned

by TRaygun on 5/14/25TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - ClevelandRating: 2 out of 5

First off, the band was great. I really enjoyed the show. They had a lot of energy and it was fun. The venue is bad. Doors opened at 6:30. We arrived at about 7:30. The line was around the block. Thank goodness it was a decent day in Cleveland. When we finally got to the doors my ticket was scanned. The person scanning said it it read possible screenshot, and that I had to go to the box office. I had to wait in another line here. I don't understand how this happened. I used the Ticketmaster app and the tickets had a line sliding through it so I was not a screenshot. Next, the venue sound was awful. It was very echoey. You could not make out when they talked to the crowd. Lines for merch and food and beverage were very long. People we waiting in long lines and the show was starting.

  • Great show but……

by Onitme on 5/14/25TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

I will first start by saying the concert was great, it was glad to have Devo in town and performing". The problem was getting in the building the line out the door was horrible and by the time we actually got in, I had five minutes to use the bathroom and the concert had started. It would’ve been nice if they would’ve waited a little bit, so everybody was in the building. Not sure what the problem is, but it was the first time I encountered it.. I go to 50 concerts a year and this was a first. I would also like to say overall the staff is very nice.

  • Great Show, but LONG line

by Mojo on 5/14/25TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

Great show by Devo! (They played it a bit safe for a farewell show, but all the favorites were there!) The only problem was that we missed the first 5 songs due to the long line to get into the venue. Devo started promptly at 8:00pm, but we couldn't get to our seats until 8:20 or so.

  • Great show by DEVO

by Bob on 5/14/25TempleLive Cleveland Masonic - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

My first time seeing them. Started with the Meet and Greet. All 5 guys were there, friendly, and answered questions while signing albums etc. The show was full of energy from start to finish. Almost no breaks between songs except for outfit changes. All the vocals were really good. The sound highlighted each instrument and made sure the vocals were out front of the music when needed. Showmanship from all. Gerry on the keyboards constantly moving with steps and hand gestures, Mark on lead vocals and other keyboards always moving and expressive. Bob great on guitar and vocals. Josh- keyboards, guitar and vocals was fun to watch doing his robotic guitar playing. Finally, Jeff Friedl was great on drums playing his butt off. These guys were so good as musicians, vocally and put on a great high energy show. You didnt know who to watch because there was stuff going on all over the stage. Hope they keep touring because I want to fit them into my schedule again!

  • Well worth the trip. Awesome.

Great show, high energy, played their best hits. Visuals were awesome and engaged the audience! Reminded me of when I saw them back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, in Boston!
