About

Born in the Azawagh desert of Niger, Mdou Moctar taught himself to play a homemade guitar and found his first fans in the West African mobile phone music trading network. After one of those tracks proved a standout on the cult compilation Music From Saharan Cellphones Vol. 1, he was signed to Sahel Sounds where his electrified, psych-influenced takes on traditional Tuareg guitar reached even wider acclaim.

But Moctar became even more of a cult figure as the star and soundtrack composer for Christopher Kirkley’s 2015 film Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai – a hit at film festivals around the world, and not only the first Tuareg-language feature film but also a Prince homage unlike any other.

Making his Australian debut as part of a trio, Moctar calls to mind Jimi Hendrix at his most mystical, as well as the West African desert-rock giants whose traditions he has twisted into something that feels entirely new.

Special acoustic show at Delmar Hall in St. Louis. It was amazing! I highly recommend seeing this band.

Incredible band. Desert trance meets Hendrix. Venue was really nice. The only drawback was paying for ParkingWhiz which put us at a lot blocks away from the venue. If we had parked there, we would have had to walk under an overpass that was filled with homeless people. Not safe. We parked for $20 across the street from the venue which was perfect. Could not get a refund from Parking Whiz. No go on them.

  • Fabulous band, terrible warm-up band

by Ingal on 6/30/249:30 CLUB - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Mdou Moctar was fantastic. I would love to see them again at a different location and without the warm-up band. The band, and especially the lead singer has a great stage presence, and the music was excellent. The guitar work was amazing. I especially liked when the drummer played the traditional drum instead of the western style drum because it didn't overpower the music. I introduced my daughter and her boyfriend to this band by taking them with me, and they loved it. Boyfriend bought a vinyl and my daughter bought a t-shirt. People of all ages were there enjoying the music. The venue, the 9:30 club in Washington, DC, was a good venue, but I am thinking that the sound mixer could have done a much better job. The drumming often drowned out the singing, and I was there for the singing. I found this also to be the case for the warm-up band, which make me think that it was a sound-mixing issue. Having said that, nothing could have helped that warm-up band. Oh my G-d. It was just screaming noise and rage, and the 2 (!) drummers seemed intent on destroying their drum sets -- never have I seen drumsticks used as a weapon on unsuspecting drums! I just had to sit down and wait for them to be over. All I could think of when I asked myself why would such a talented band choose this particular warm up band was that it would really make the audience appreciate Mdou Moctar after suffering through that other band first.

  • Surreal, Ethereal Experience

The music is just so pure and mesmerizing. Was blown away by the vocals and the drums. Work on the guitar? You've never heard anything like this!

  • Moving Towards Heavier: Still Awesome

by Tranquilo on 3/25/229:30 CLUB - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

So Moctar started in a more folk/acoustic vein and then has been getting heavier. His latest album marks that, as obviously the current show. My own description is if Jimi Hendrix had been born in a nomad camp in the Sahara, this is it. Unfiltered psychedelic trance jams but through a different orientation. AND a new drummer who plays out of his mind all the time; reminds me of Keith Moon at 100% with no inhibition. It takes a lot to get me to a live show, but this totally worth it. Note: the crowd who loved him, was the NPR/PBS type; white, a little older for the venue, and open to world experience, one block from Howard University.

  • Mdou Moctar was amazing!

I am glad I decided to go -- it was my first live event in two years and it was totally worth it. He was on top of his game. My only problem -- he barely played for an hour. Should have been longer.

  • Incredible Atmosphere

Mdou Moctar is one of the best live bands I've seen. The music speaks of the lead singer & guitarist's story, and leaves you entranced. The guitar is just unbelievable. I'll be going again next time they're in town!
